Stay Focused

We came with nothing and we will leave with nothing.

We were not purposed on this earth to obtain material possessions or to become obsessed with these things.

We should not be in such a pursuit of material things that we fall into temptation and a snare.

The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil (verse 10).

We should pursue God, righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.

When we seek God's kingdom and righteousness first, things will be added to us.

When we delight ourselves in the Lord, he will give us the desires of our heart.

We must remain focused on chasing after God and not chasing after things.

According to verse 13 "these things" refer to giving attention to reading, to exhoration, and to doctrine.

We need to give deep consideration for these things so that our progress is evident.

One reason is to give you the ability to declare His works to the world.

We overcome by the words of our testimony.

Satan wants us to sit around feeling sad and sorry for ourselves.

In the familiar story of the Hebrews boys, King Nebuchadnezzar commanded the them to serve and worship his gods. But they refused.

The word that remains the same in all translations is the word "righteous."

As Christians, righteous refers to being in right standing with God. We are declared righteous because of our position in Jesus Christ.

Righteous also refers to our conduct. Righteous means to act in an upright, moral way.

To be called "righteous" we must be found in Christ and make it a habit to obey God.

He is slow to anger.

I am grateful that our sin, disobedience, and slothfulness does not easily frustrate God.

WARNING: This characteristic of God does not mean that we can take him for granted and continue to live any way we see fit.

Even as God is slow to anger there are still consequences for all of our actions.

On another note we are made in God's image, therefore we are to be merciful, gracious, and slow to anger with one another as well.

Defense -resistance against attack; to guard against assault or injury

We have an enemy that attacks us. This scripture gives us tools to use to protect us from the attacks.

That tools are wisdom and money.

God has also given us what we need to get them both.

James 1:5 tells us "If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him."

Deuteronomy 8:18 says, "But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day."

The end of a thing is better than its beginning; the patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.

The end will be better than the beginning.

The suffering of this present time is not worthy to even be compared to the glory which shall be revealed in us (Romans 8:18).

You have need of patient endurance so that when you have done the will of God you will receive what God has promised (Hebrews 10:36).

Wait on and rest in the Lord and renew your strength (Isaiah 40:31).

God's Holy Spirit dwells in our bodies.

Please notice that there are no stipulations on the request for praise in this scripture.

The scripture does not say shout if you "feel" like it.

The scripture does not say break forth in song if all your bills are paid.

The scripture does not say rejoice and sing praises if everything in your life is all good right now.

There are no stipulations!

No matter what we are facing right now God is still worthy of all the praise!

So go ahead and shout, even if you have a sinus headache right now.

Go ahead and break forth in song even if your car is giving you trouble.

Go ahead and rejoice and sing praises if it looks like the walls are closing in on you right now.

Do it because God is still God!

Confidence Like Job

Job 23:10-12

But He knows the way that I take; when He has tested me, I shall come forth as gold. My foot has held fast to His steps; I have kept His way and not turned aside. I have not departed from the commandment of His lips; I have treasured the words of His mouth more than my necessary food.

Job had confidence that at the end of his tests, trials, and tribulations he would come out as gold (a precious element that is not subject to corrosion).

Precious-of great value; highly esteemed

Job knew that he would be valued by God because he held fast to God's steps.

Steps-to lift up the foot and put it down in a new position accompanied by shifting the body in the direction of a new position

We should be willing and obedient to move when God is ready to move.

Job knew that he would be highly esteemed because he kept God's ways and commands.

Way-manner, characteristics; methods, plans

No matter what he faced, Job did not curse God's methods or plans.

Because of his integrity towards God, Job was able to confidently say when this is over I will come forth as pure gold.

We should live life, holding to God's steps and keeping His way and commandments.

God Will

2 Corinthians 9:8
And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work:

Able- physically or mentally equipped to do something, especially because of circumstances

Grace- unmerited favor and love of God

Abound– be plentiful, thrive, flourish

Sufficiency- adequate, ample, enough, plenty

Take comfort and joy in knowing that God can cause favor to be plentiful towards you.

You will always have plenty to complete every good work that is assigned to you.

The Good of the Land

Isaiah 1:19

In the previous verses of Romans chapter 8, we are told that God foreknew, predestined, called, justified, and glorified us.

These things let us know that God is on our side. He is for us.

Predestined, Called, Justified, and Glorified

God foreknows (to know before hand).
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5
Just as God foreknew Jeremiah, He foreknows us as well.

God predestines (to set apart for a particular use).
You are not an accident or mistake. God had a particular purpose in mind for you before He created you.

God calls (command or request to come).
God invites us to operate in His divine purpose that He has designed. Will you answer the call?

God justifies (to declare innocent or guiltless).
Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. Romans 5:9
We are justified by the blood of Jesus. We have the liberty to fully operate in our purpose.

God glorifies (to cause to be more splendid, excellent; to invest honor).
If we are children, then heirs, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him. Romans 8:17
So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ as well as a partaker in the glory that is to be revealed. 1 Peter 5:1
When God glorifies a human being, he grants to that person the privilege of beholding his infinite beauty and becoming like him as much as a creature can.

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Help from the Spirit

Don't Be Anxious...Pray

Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression, but a good word makes it glad.
Philippians 4:6

Never Forsaken...Blessed

Psalm 37:25-26
I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread. He is ever merciful, and lends; and his descendants are blessed.

You May Be Down...But You Are Not Out

Psalm 37:23-24

Power Points

Although our steps are ordered, those steps may sometimes lead us into undesirable, uncomfortable situations.

For example the "ordered" steps for three Hebrew boys led them into a fiery furnace. (Then these men were bound in their coats, their trousers, their turbans, and their other garments, and were cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Therefore, because the king’s command was urgent, and the furnace exceedingly hot, the flame of the fire killed those men who took up Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego. And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abed-Nego, fell down bound into the midst of the burning fiery furnace. Daniel 3:21-23)

The steps of these men were ordered. According to verse 23 they "fell down" into a burning furnace. They were down...but not out.

Psalm 37 tells us that though we fall we are not utterly (totally; completely) cast down.

Psalm 37 goes on to encourage us by letting us know the God will uphold (support or defend; keep up or from sinking; lift upward or raise) us.

God is so awesome that when He delivered the Hebrew boys from the burning furnace, they did not even look like what they had been through nor smell like smoke (And the satraps, administrators, governors, and the king’s counselors gathered together, and they saw these men on whose bodies the fire had no power; the hair of their head was not singed nor were their garments affected, and the smell of fire was not on them. Daniel 3:27)

The steps that God has ordered you may lead you into uncomfortable place, just know that God is there to support, defend, and lift you up.

God will never leave you nor forsake you.

You may be down right now...oh but you are not out!

When you come out, you won't even smell like smoke!

Abundance of Peace

Psalm 37:11

But the meek shall inherit the earth and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.

Power Points

Meek -humbly patient, yeilding

Delight -a high degree of pleasure or enjoyment; joy

Abundance -an extremely plentiful or oversufficient quantity or supply

Peace -untroubled; tranquil; content; calm

Be patient and you will have a high degree of enjoyment of an oversufficient supply of untroubled calmness.

Wait

Psalm 37:9
For evildoers shall be cut off; but those who wait on the Lord, they shall inherit the earth.

Rest...Don't Fret

Psalm 37:7-8

Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret-it only causes harm.

Commit Your Way to the Lord!

Psalm 37:5
Commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass.

Delight Yourself in the Lord

Psalm 37:3-4
Trust in the Lord and do good, dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness. Delight yourself in the Lord, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Power Points

Trust the Lord. Lean not to your own understanding.

Do good! No matter what others are doing, we must do GOOD!

God is faithful. He will do just what He promised. Feed on His faithfulness!

Take joy in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.

Precious Lovingkindness

Psalm 36:7-10
How precious is Your lovingkindness, O God! Therefore the children of men put their trust under the shadow of Your wings. They are abundantly satisfied with the fullness of Your house, and You give them drink from the river of Your pleasures. For with You is the fountain of life; in Your light we see light. Oh, continue Your lovingkindness to those who know You, and Your righteousness to the upright in heart.

God's lovingkindness is ever present and precious.

We can trust Him.

When we trust Him, we are abundantly (more than enough) satisfied.

There is No Other!

Deuteronomy 4:39

Therefore know this day, and consider it in your heart, that the LORD Himself is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.

No one else loves us like He does.

The Lord Preserves!

Psalm 36:5-6

Your mercy, O LORD, is in the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the clouds. Your righteousness is like the great mountains; your judgments are a great deep;O LORD, You preserve man and beast.

The Lord is merciful and faithful.

The Lord is righteous.

The Lord preserves us.

Preserve means to keep alive or in existence; make lasting; to keep safe from harm or injury; protect or spare;to keep up; maintain.

Be Joyful & Rejoice

And my soul shall be joyful in the LORD; it shall rejoice in His salvation.

Afflictions

Psalm 34:19
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all.

Power Points

The reality of life is that we all face afflictions.

Trials and tribulations come to make us strong.

It is in our weakness that we can see the strength and power of God.

The second part to the reality is that the LORD delivers us out of them all.

He will make a way of escape!

Seek the Lord with all your heart.

Seek Him first.

Where is Your Trust?

Proverbs 11:28

He who trusts in his riches will fall, but the righteous will flourish like foliage.

Power Points

According to Ecclesiastes 10:19, money answers all things.

Money is a necessity.

We have to remember that money is a resource; God is the source.

We can not put our trust (reliance, confidence) in the riches of this world.

At times we become worried, frustrated, or depressed about whether or not the resources will show up.

This scripture tells us that the righteous will flourish (be successful).

We only need to concern ourselves with operating in righteousness (right standing with God).

God leads us in the path of righteousness (Psalm 23:3)

Follow Him and you will flourish!

He Delivers

Psalm 34:4
I sought the LORD, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.

Power Points

Seek the Lord in prayer for all things.

He hears you.

He delivers you from your fears.

Trust and hope in Him. Wait on Him.

God is faithful!

No matter what it looks or feels like, God will never leave you nor forsake you!
